ChemSec Event ‘Ready, Set, Substitute It Now!’

Rachel London, one of PFA’s regulatory chemists, attended the ChemSec full-day event on November 14th in Brussels.

The event included several progressive companies and scientists who provided the attendees with hard facts and messages from policy makers. The event also included panel discussions along with workshops to provide an overview on how to best substitute hazardous chemicals.

The event also launched the first major update in five years to the Substitute It Now (SIN) list, presented by Dr. Anna Lennquist (Senior Toxicologist at ChemSec). Using the same criteria as within the REACH legislation, the SIN List contains includes all chemicals that ChemSec have categorised as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).  The list update included 29 Persistent, Mobile and Toxic (PMT), or very Persistent and very Mobile (vPvM) mixtures, 16 Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT), or very Persistent and very Bioaccumulative (vPvB) substances and the first nanomaterial was added – Carbon nanotubes.

Some of the keynote speakers at the event were:

  • Jacqueline Alvarez, Senior Manager at UNEP

  • Kestutis Sadauskas, Direct at DG Environment

  • Jutta Paulus, Member of the European Parliament

  • Charlene Wall Warren, Director Environmental Technologies at Apple
